Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Products

Glass-fiber plastic (GRP) is an anisotropic and directional composite, meaning that its
properties apparent in the direction of the applied load and the best mechanical
properties are in the direction of the fiber placement. Different from traditional
construction materials, for example steel, stainless steel or aluminum, GRP is an
improved fibrous reinforcement which shares similar engineering function as
conventional materials. It is the result of an unalloyed mixture of two completely
dissimilar materials, which confer their distinct properties to each other without
losing individual’s characteristic.


GRP product provides an efficient and cost effective solution for all flooring,
walkways and decking areas where requiring ultimate resistance to corrosion.

Strength

 

The GRP possesses approximately 65% glass as reinforcement and 35% resin content by weight, giving it a very high strength to weight ratio. Fillers and additives used in manufacturing GRP enhance the stiffness and durability and make it an economic substitute to metal.

Deflection

 

Specimens of the GRP had been sent to HOKLAS laboratory for loading tests. The laboratory reports are attached in Appendix A & B. Based on the laboratory results*, it is found that the GRP products comply with the requirement of PS clause 24.16 2(a). 

Durable anti-slip surface


Slip and fall accidents are the single most expensive and common type of industrial accident. There are three types of non-slip surface which make GRP panel suitable in slippery working area. In addition, the grating has evenly perforated area of 78% where stagnant water shall not be a problem. 


Embedded grit

Grit is added to the mold after the grating has been laid but not cured. Grit and resin are forced into the top of the grating and allowed to cure with the grating


Post-cure grit

After the grating is cured and removed from the mold, grit is applied to the top of the grating with a strong adhesive. The grit surface is heat-cured with an additional top coat of adhesive for a maximum bond.


Meniscus
No grit is added after grating is cured and removed from the mold. A natural anti slip meniscus surface is formed during the curing process.

Appearance & Color

 

GRP dockings come in form of square mesh, rectangular mesh and minimesh. All finished surface shall be smooth, non-skid, resin-rich, free of voids and without dry spots, cracks or unreinforced areas. Well covered with resin to protect against the exposure due to wear or weathering. Color is integrally pigmented within the GRP unit. An assortment of standard colors are available and custom colors are available for special order to meet PS Clause 24.16 2(e).

Installation system

 

Four kinds of interlocking system help secure decking to structural supports(i.e M clip, C clip, G clip and L clip). All hold-down clips are made of 316 SS for maximum corrosion resistance.

 

M clip
To restrain movement in all direction and to secure decking on support structure.


C clip
To connect two unsupported ends of adjacent panels.


G clip
To restrain movement in all direction and to secure decking on support structure.


L clip
To secure decking on support structure.

 

A minimum of 4 clips per panel is recommended, with extra clips at mid-span on larger panels. The GRP grating products are easily cut with standard power tools. The installation time is much faster than that of using steel because of its light weight (23.7kgs/m2) and easy accessibility, requiring no special lifting or installation equipment.

Ultra-violet(UV)/Fire/Corrosion resistance


All GRP products are manufactured with resins containing UV inhibitors. UV resistance is enhanced with the use of a synthetic surfacing veil, creating a ‘resin rich’ surface. Flame retardants are added to all resin used. They are tested and classified with flame spread rating of 25 or less. GRP has excellent thermal insulation with low thermal conductivity compared to metallic structure. GRP displays superior resistance to a great variety of corrosive environment and chemicals. It will not rust or corrode, providing many years of use with little or
no maintenance. No scraping or painting required.
